ROPES Course

Reality-Oriented Physical Experiential Services (ROPES) opportunities are available to children, adolescents and their families.

Children and adolescents describe the course as fun-filled, exciting and a meaningful experience that has helped them learn how to get along with others, be a positive peer and use the skills they are learning in therapies and in the milieu.

The ROPES course includes:
  • medicine wheel with fountain
  • climbing tower with three different faces based on degree of difficulty
    • West Face – Little Bear / Moose Tracks Routes
    • East Face – Overhangs
    • South Face – Moki Way, Totem Pole and Mesa Verde Routes)

  • the great divide
  • elder’s chair
  • lightning bolt
  • teepee triangle
  • Orion
  • Thunderbird
  • Eagle’s Flight, a challenge which occurs prior to discharge

The course has three wood sculptures – eagle, buffalo and coyote, and also includes a series of “low” elements such as the spider web.

As with all elements on the course, San Marcos operates under a “challenge by choice” concept which permits each participant to set goals for individual success in the absence of coercion. Technological advancements along with specialized training greatly reduce risk.

The course is routinely inspected and industry standards are consistently met. Every piece of equipment from ropes to pulleys to carabiners are rated to support a minimum of 5,000 pounds. While our ROPES course may create an illusion of approximate risk, at no time is any child, adolescent or family member actually in danger.
